Phase 10 Instructions

Player Count: 2-6 players

Age Range: ages 7+

How to Win!

  • Have the lowest total score at the end of the game!

Set-Up:

  • At the beginning of each new round, shuffle the deck and deal each participating player 10 cards.
  • Place the remaining stack of cards in the middle of the table.
  • Flip the top card of the remaining stack face up next to the deck to create the discard pile.

About the Cards:

  • The deck of cards is made up of four colors, each color containing cards numbered 1 through 12.
  • There are also eight wild cards and four skip cards.
    • Wilds can be played as any card or any number.
  • There are also phase cards, these list the 10 phases you must complete during the game. They are:
    • 2 sets of 3
    • 1 set of 3 and one run of 4
    • 1 set of 4 and one run of 4
    • 1 run of 7
    • 1 run of 8
    • 1 run of 9
    • 2 sets of 4
    • 7 cards of one color
    • 1 set of 5 and 1 set of 2
    • 1 set of 5 and 1 set of 3
  • Sets are cards that match (all 3’s or all 7’s)
  • Runs are numbers in a consecutive numerical sequence (1,2,3,4 or 7,8,9,10)
  • Color of the card does not matter for the round unless the round explicitly requires it.

How to Play:

  • The player left of the dealer will start the game.
  • On their turn players MUST draw one card from either the discard pile or the deck.
  • At the end of their turn a player MUST discard a card from their hand.

Playing a Phase:

  • During your turn, if you have met all of the requirements of the current phase, you may lay the applicable cards face up in front of you. This effectively removes them from your hand.
  • You may have more cards that fit the requirement than the minimum, you will play them at the same time as you lay down your cards. For example, if you have a set of four and a wild card, you may lay down all five and create a set of five, even though the prompt is only for a set of four.
  • However, if players have the required cards, they are NOT required to play them immediately. They may wait to lay down their cards.

“Going Out”:

  • The way to end any round, a player must “Go out” and have 0 cards left in their hand. Because players are always drawing and discarding one card per turn, the way to do so is by playing cards on your and other player’s phases.
  • This can only be done AFTER you have played your phase on the table.
  • Once you have your cards on the table, you may play cards in your hand onto your, or other players, cards on the table as long as they match the requirements. For example, if another player has a run of 5,6,7,8 and you have a 4 or a 9 in your hand, you may play them there.
  • You may do this any number of times during your subsequent turns.
  • To “Go out” one player must be left with 0 cards in their hand after playing on phases and discarding. This ends the round immediately.

Scoring:

  • End of Round Scoring:
    • Once a player has 0 cards, the round is over.
    • Currently, the player with 0 cards gets a score of 0 points.
    • All other players add up the remaining cards in their hand as follows:
      • Cards 1-9 are worth 5 points each
      • Cards 10-12 are worth 10 points each
      • Skip and wildcards are worth 25 points each
    • Mark everyone's score, and continue to the next phase.
    • ONLY the players who have completed the current phase may move to the next phase, all players who failed to meet the current phase repeat it until they are successful
  • End of Game Scoring:
    • The game finishes when a player has successfully completely phase 10, and a player has gone out signaling the end of that round, the game is over.
    • Tally scores for this round as normal.
    • Add up everyone's individual scores through all rounds

The player with the lowest total score wins!
